Highlanders Shine at Middle School State and Big Spring Brawl in Lewistown

What a weekend for the Glasgow Wrestling Club! The squad traveled to Central Montana to compete in the Middle School State Tournament on Saturday and the Big Spring Brawl on Sunday. Both events were held at Fergus Schools in Lewistown. Saturday’s Middle School event was limited to 5th through 8th grade, while Sunday was for those Highlanders age 12 and under.

It was a record-breaking performance for GWC at Middle School State. This year’s true All-Class event featured a total of 736 wrestlers from over 60 clubs/schools. It is the 9th year of Middle School State and this year’s team broke a participation record; sending 27 wrestlers to the event. The Girls made a major statement by finishing in 3rd Place overall out of 43 teams with 95 points! 1st place among all Class B feeder programs in the State, finishing behind only Darkhorse (Class AA Billings Senior) and Havre (Class A). It is the best finish in club history for our girls in both total points and overall place finish. Ten Highlander girls hit the mats and contributed to bringing home the team hardware from this prestigious event. Six of the girls made the podium; led by State Runner-up Kylie Aho and Bronze Medalists; Riley Pedersen and Riley Pattison. The Boys were very impressive in their own right. Finishing in 5th place overall out of 59 teams with 165.5 points, trailing only the Project Wrestling Club among all Class B feeder programs in the state. The team point total is a new record for the Highlander boys and the 5th place finish is the second best in Club history (4th place in 2017). Six boys made the podium led by STATE Champion Jack Morehouse and Bronze medalist Weston Kirkland. Morehouse and Kirkland were both in the 115 lb. bracket that featured 38 wrestlers. The 12 total placers for the Boys and Girls also secures a new club record.

On Sunday, the youngest members of the club did battle on the same mats. This time at an event termed the “Big Spring Brawl”. Twenty six Highlanders battled and brought home a 2nd place team finish out of the 28 clubs in attendance. On the backs of eight Individual Champions and sixteen top three place finishers; GWC put together 94 team points falling just 6 points short of the tournament host.

The Club will now head to Sidney this coming weekend for the annual Brodie Gorder Memorial. Both Boys and Girls team will compete in the Dual Tournaments on Saturday and the remaining members of the club will join for the Individual tournament on Sunday.

26 Champions Crowned in Glendive and Havre

The Highlanders spread out across Eastern and Northern Montana this weekend. The club enjoyed great success at both the Battle of the Badlands event in Glendive and the Havre Middle School Meet on Saturday. They topped off an impressive weekend with more of the same on Sunday at the Pre-Pony Rumble in Havre.

Saturday’s Invitational in Glendive featured 418 wrestlers from 16 different clubs. The Highlanders brought 28 wrestlers to the event and walked away with TEN Individual Champions and twenty Top three place finishers. The team won 61% of their matches on the day with 43 of the wins coming by way of Pin or Technical Fall!

On the very same day, sixteen of our 5th through 8th grade grapplers competed in the Havre Middle School Tournament and turned out SEVEN Individual Titles and fourteen top three place finishes. The Middle School Highlanders impressed with a 78% winning percentage at the event, finishing with a 42-12 overall record! 33 of the wins came via Pin or Technical fall.

On Sunday, the younger Highlanders took their turn on the Blue Pony mats. It was more of the same, however, as GWC would ultimately crown NINE Individual Champions and twenty five top three place finishers. 33 Highlanders did battle on Sunday and finished with a whopping 44 wins by pin!

Next weekend the Highlanders will be competing in Lewistown. Middle School State will be on Saturday for all 5th thru 8th graders, while the Big Spring Brawl will follow on Sunday for all of those age 12 and under.

Highlanders Rounding into Midseason Form

The Glasgow Wrestling Club is coming off of a busy weekend that saw competition in Butte, Poplar, and Plentywood. The Poplar and Plentywood Invitationals were Northeast Division events while the Cyclops in Butte offered many of our wrestlers a taste of some premier competition.

On Saturday and Sunday, Twenty five Highlanders did battle in the Butte Civic Center at an event that featured 83 clubs and 1,212 competitors. The Cyclops is known as the premier regular season event in Montana and it did not disappoint. In the end, GWC would finish in 10th place overall with 178.5 team points. Finishing 4th place in the medium team division and 2nd place amongst all Class B/C feeder programs at the event. 18 individuals found the podium with a top 6 finish; while five Highlanders would bring home the GOLD!

The Poplar Invite featured 10 clubs and 307 wrestlers. Twenty six Highlanders took to the mat and put on quite a show against fellow Northeast Division competition. Eight Individual Champions were crowned and nineteen Top 3 finishers would ultimately lead the way for GWC.

On Sunday, a small contingent of the club attended the Border Brawl Tournament hosted by the Northeast Wrestling Club at Plentywood High School. Eight clubs attended the event and it featured a total of 166 wrestlers. Eight of our Highlanders showed up and wrestled extremely well. All eight finished in the top 3 and two were crowned Individual Champions.

This upcoming week the club will host our Annual Spaghetti Feed and Pie Auction on Thursday Night 6:00 PM at the Glasgow Elks Lodge! Over the weekend, we will send a large group of wrestlers to both Havre and Glendive.

GWC Shines at MonDak Open in Williston

The Highlanders hit the road to North Dakota this weekend to compete at the MonDak Open on the campus of Williston State. 605 wrestlers from twenty eight different youth clubs were in attendance. GWC was well represented as the 4th largest team at the event with 50 strong! The Highlanders won 61% of their matches. 62 of those wins came by pin and another 7 by technical fall. The team was led by 13 Individual Champions and 31 top four finishers.
The coaches could not be more proud than we are right now after our first five weeks of practice and competition. We are looking forward to taking the traditional weekend off to cheer on our Scottie Wrestling teams this Thursday through Saturday at the High School State Tournament in the Billings Metra. The club will be back in action with both the Poplar Invitational and the Butte Cyclops Tournament the weekend of February 22-23.

Highlanders Tear It Up on Opening Weekend

The Glasgow Highlanders started practice on Monday January 6th and by the weekend they were ready to compete! GWC brought the largest team to this past Saturday’s Wolf Point Invitational. There were eleven different clubs in attendance, but none bigger than Glasgow’s sixty three competitors! Our future Scotties picked up right where they had left off at the end of last season. GWC was led by an incredible 19 Individual Champions and 49 Top three finishers. Glasgow led ALL teams in attendance with 108 total victories. 83 of those 108 wins came by Pin or Technical Fall (winning by 15+ points). Very impressive opening weekend to say the least.
This upcoming weekend, the majority of the club will compete Sunday at the “Little Cowboy” in Miles City, while others will attend Helltown Throwdown in Helena or the Wild West Championships in Casper, Wyoming.

Highlanders Strike Gold at Black Hills Nationals

Eleven Highlanders extended their season at this weekend ‘s prestigous Black Hills Nationals / AAU World Folkstyle Wrestling Championships in Spearfish, South Dakota. There were a record 1,472 wrestlers in attendance at the 20th Annual event. GWC may have brought a small group, but they would prove mighty! 9 of the 11 found their way onto the podium with a Top 8 finish to earn individual “AAU All-American” Honors.

FIVE Highlanders would make the finals; with TenLea Sundeen, Taden Sundeen, Saunten Gamas, and Brenley Flaten finishing runner-up and Collins Flaten winning an Individual Championship. Tate Lehner, Madison Lamb, Lyla Lehner, and Harlee Vandermars would also snag podium spots at the 2-day event.

The Glasgow Wrestling Club ended up finishing in 13th Place overall out of 228 teams in attendance. Securing 3rd place among ALL Montana teams. Trailing only Team Champs (Billings West) and Heights Wrestling Club (Billings Skyview). The Highlanders were the smallest team in the Top 20 of the final Team Standings. An overall impressive showing by the local squad.

Eight Highlanders will travel with Team Montana this coming weekend to Des Moines, Iowa for the AAU National Duals! William Kirkland, Tyler King, Madison Lamb, Hunter Pierce, Jack Morehouse and Aiden Aune have ALL qualified. Chloe Lamb and Bailey Dooley will travel as Middle School Girl alternates.

Our annual End of the Year Pizza/Bowling Party will take place at El Cor Del Lanes this Sunday April 7th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. ALL current Glasgow Highlanders and their immediate families are invited to close out this highly succesful season in grand fashion.

Highlanders Rise to the Occasion at Montana Open

The most prestigious tournament in our home state is the Montana Open at the Billings Metra! GWC brought the 6th largest team to the event this year with 55 wrestlers. It was a total team effort to put up 221 points and finish in 13th place overall out of 195 clubs in attendance. The Highlanders were 3rd place amongst Class B/C feeder programs.

Leading the way were four Individual Champions and four runner-ups! TenLea Sundeen, Ryan Gamas, Aurora Markle, and Walker Kirkland would each collect a tournament title and WIN the coveted “Skull”. 31 out of 55 wrestlers reached the podium with a Top 6 finish. The 4 champions and 31 individual placers both make up the 2nd most in club history at the premier event.

The Open signals the end of the season for the majority of the Club. The Highlanders, however, will send a smaller contingent to Black Hills Nationals in Spearfish, South Dakota this coming Friday and Saturday. Eight Highlanders will also join Team Montana and head to the AAU National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa the first weekend in April.

Glasgow Highlanders WIN AAU State Championship!

WOW! The Highlanders put on one heck of a show in Montana’s greatest venue this weekend. For the first time in club history; the Glasgow Wrestling Club Boys WON the Large Team AAU State Championship. The Girls won the Large Team title in 2022 and the Boys have claimed Small and Medium team titles throughout the storied history of the program, but had never went up against every single Class AA feeder program to win the highest honor. Until this year!

There was a record 1,271 boys in attendance representing 85 different youth clubs. The Highlander boys brought 43 wrestlers to the big dance and scored a whopping 463 points. It was good enough for the 4th most points overall; which in itself is the best finish in program history! Only Team Champs (Billings West), Sidney, and Billings Wrestling Club finished with more total points. The 463 points is the 2nd most the Glasgow Boys have ever scored at a State AAU tournament. (492 points in 2022)
According to Montana AAU By-Laws. The small, medium, and Large Team Titles are determined by a club’s total points divided by their total number of wrestlers. That formula gave Glasgow 10.767 points/per wrestler just ahead of Class AA power Team Champs (Billings West) with 10.535 points/per wrestler. 2-time defending AAU Large Team Champion, Huntley Project, finished in 3rd place and Billings Wrestling Club finished in a close 4th. It was the strength of six Individual CHAMPIONS and twenty one state placers that put the mighty Highlanders over the top!

The Boys also finished in 2nd place overall for the famed Bobby McKinley Trophy; which is given to the best “10-man” team at the event. Huntley Project would score 82 to win the plaque, GWC would come just one point short by scoring 81, and Team Champs was 3rd in the McKinley race with 79 points.

The Highlander Girls would shine bright right alongside the boys this weekend as they were simply DOMINANT from start to finish! The event featured a record 448 girls and GWC brought their own record of 24 girls to the State Meet. It was the 3rd largest female team in attendance. At the end of three intense days of Wrestling; the Highlander Girls would finish in 2nd Place overall out of 64 clubs with a team record 243.5 points. The girls added an Individual Champion and a team record nineteen individual state placers! Only Class AA Billings Darkhorse Girls (Billings Senior) would put up more team points this weekend in the Metra. It is the 4th consecutive year that the Highlander Girls have finished in the Top 3 overall at the State AAU tournament and the 4th consecutive year of finishing above ALL other Class B/C feeder programs. The future is extremely bright for the ladies of Glasgow Wrestling.

The Girls also finished in 3rd place overall for the Walt Egged Award; which is given to the best “10-man” team at the event. Billings Darkhorse would score 77 to win the plaque, Billings Heights scored 56 to finish runner-up, and the Highlanders rounded out the top three with 52 points.

It was another year of records being smashed by the local club. The 67 wrestlers was the second most GWC has ever brought to a State AAU Meet. The 40 combined Boys and Girls Individual State Placers breaks last year’s record of 37! The 706.5 combined Team Points is also a NEW standard for a youth Wrestling Club that has been around since 1968. To top it all off, six Highlanders used their performances from this weekend to earn a spot on the AAU National Duals team. William Kirkland, Jack Morehouse, Aiden Aune, Hunter Pierce, Tyler King, and Madison Lamb will now represent Team Montana in Des Moines, Iowa on April 5th-7th. Bailey Dooley and Chloe Lamb have both been named as Team Montana alternates for the trip to Iowa. Outstanding all the way around.

GWC will do it all again next weekend as the Highlanders will head back to the Billings Metra for the premier event in the region, the Montana Open! Action will begin late Friday afternoon and continue through Sunday afternoon. The event is expected to smash more attendance records.
